25 Members of each of 200 teenage mother groups are out of school girls between the ages of 19 and 28 years. They are living in extreme poverty conditions; struggling for access to standard food intake, decent accommodation, clothing and other resources for decent physical and healthy appearances and sustainable sources of income to address the social / economic needs of family members, particularly children under five years. All group members are purposefully single parents and are generally malnourished.
From the crowdfunding grants provided by online donors, the teenagers are provided $100 business startup grants.
The group members sell consumer farm products such as palm oil, coconut oil, peanut seeds /butter, and beni-seed powder, which are in high demand and consumed on daily basis in every household within the urban cities of Liberia. The teenagers make two business cycles per week if they sell in their local communities and 3 business cycles if they transport and sell in their county capitals, which are approximately 50 miles away, Month sales within the local community make up to 120% profit and in County headquarters, up to 150% profit.
Out of the net weekly income of $150, each of the 25 members to each group will save a total of approximately $30 on a personal bank account created for that purpose. Of the remaining net income, about $50 is used on food, clothing, medicare and other socio-economic needs. Roughly, $20 is used to scale up the business. This cycle continues every week on the group and business.
BY THE END 12 MONTHS, THIS PROJECT WILL MAKE 5,000 TEENAGE MOTHERS BECOME ECONOMICALLY AND SOCIALLY SELF-RELIANT
